CCBS MScR/PhD enquiry route C: devising a bespoke project

An alternative route to finding a supervisor and a project is available for prospective students who can self-fund or who have very specific research interests. This route is also the one to take for the Psychiatry MScR.

Please follow this route if:

  • you can self-fund all your costs (living costs, tuition fees and consumables/travel), or you have funding from your Government or similar. You are not reliant on applying for a funded project.

or

  • you have a very specific idea for the topic of your MScR/PhD project, and you haven't seen anything suitable among advertised projects.  If you cannot self-fund, you must be willing to spend considerable time and energy working with your supervisor to apply for funding. Applying for funding can take up to a year. Some potential sources of funding can be found on the University Scholarships and Student Funding pages. Your supervisor will probably be able to suggest which sources are most appropriate for the research topic.

or

  • you wish to apply for the MScR in Psychiatry.

How to follow this enquiry route

Please don’t make an application via the University's Degree Finder before you have established both a supervisor and research project, as we will not be able to accept you.

1) Ensure that you meet the requirements for postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh.

2) Identify a researcher whose interests match your own, who could potentially supervise you. There is a list of our Principal Investigators on our website at CCBS Principal Investigators, and you can click through to read their profile. Do not contact potential supervisors directly at this stage.

3) Submit the CCBS Postgraduate Enquiry Form for Bespoke Projects.

You can submit the form at any time.

We will respond to you within approximately three weeks to let you know if your chosen supervisor is able to consider taking on a student at this time, if they think your academic background and skills are suitable, and if they are interested in further discussions with you.

If you do not receive a reply within three weeks, please contact the Postgraduate Administrator on  ccbs-phd@ed.ac.uk.
