Research supports call for dementia awareness
Policymakers have drawn on Edinburgh research to call for increased spending on dementia.
Professor Heather Wilkinson’s work on enabling people with dementia to influence policy and practice is one of the case studies featured in an Academy of Social Sciences publication
The Making the Case 11: Dementia booklet was presented to the House of Commons at an event in March.
The brochure was put together by an expert advisory group and features a range of research that has made an impact on policy and practice relating to dementia.

Academy of Social Science
The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences.
Its aim is to promote social sciences in the United Kingdom for the public benefit. It does this through promoting research, distributing information, organising events and contributing to public debates on issues affecting the social sciences.
Professor Heather Wilkinson
Professor Wilkinson is Director of the Centre for Research on the Experience of Dementia and Co-director of the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships at the University.
Her key areas of research include quality of life for people with dementia and people with learning disabilities, models of inclusion and social justice for significantly marginalised groups and development of methods for including people with dementia in research and policy.
