Professor Charlotte Clarke and Dr Heather Wilkinson fought off competition from several hundred entries to win first prize in the BMA's health and social care category.

Their book, Risk Assessment and Management for Living Well with Dementia, was co-written with John Keady and Catherine E. Gibb, and forms part of Jessica Kingsley Publisher's well-established series, the Bradford Dementia Group Good Practice Guides.

Professor Clarke, who accepted the award, said: “I am delighted about the book being recognised by the BMA and their panel of reviewers in this way. It is a great opportunity for this social science based book on dementia care to continue to promote the welfare of people living with dementia.

"The BMA received around 550 nominated books for the awards, so being first in the health and social care category was quite a surprise and honour.”

Books were judged on accuracy, appropriateness, quality of design and production, originality of content, approach, and value for money.

A member of the BMA reviewing panel said: “This is a novel and truly excellent book, made all the more acceptable by its brevity and clarity. It has certainly impressed me as an essential aid to those who care for people with dementia and it sets out how risk should be assessed and managed in a clear and reassuring manner. It is an excellent slim book with a really helpful approach in an increasingly important field.”
