NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health (RESPIRE)

Programme 1: Infectious Diseases

Leads: Shams Arifeen, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) and Harish Nair, University of Edinburgh

About Programme 1: Infectious Diseases

This programme of work focuses on infectious respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia.

RESPIRE projects in this area focus on four key areas

  1. The adaptation and tailoring of existing interventions, which can be incorporated into existing health care systems in each country. This also involves assessing the ability of such interventions to be delivered at a larger scale.
  2. To enrich and/or develop new cohorts of lower respiratory tract infections that will provide platforms for future clinical trials.
  3. Developing new interventions through small scale projects, to serve as proofs of concept for larger scale trials.
  4. Conducting multi-country trials to inform the development of new patient management guidelines, feeding into the evidence base for the World Health Organization (WHO).
