Alan Clyne

Graduated In 2008 Degree BEd Physical Education 

Alan is one of Scotland’s most decorated squash players, achieving success on both the European and World Stage and at multiple Commonwealth Games. While at University, and with the support of the Individual Performance Programme, Alan became the first Edinburgh student to win the British Universities Championship (2008) before going onto to compete in the British Universities team at the World University Championships, returning home with a Silver Medal. He earned his University Blue for squash in 2005-06. 

Immediately upon graduation, Alan opted to join the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour. He has now competed in over 190 PSA tournaments, clinching eight tour titles on the way, the first at the prestigious Merrill Lynch Pegasus Charleston in 2008. During his career, Alan has also secured a record ten Scottish National Titles and been ranked Scotland’s number one men’s player on twelve occasions. 

In 2010 Alan represented Scotland in both the singles and doubles events at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, reaching the doubles semi-final. He went on to represent Scotland at a further two Games, at Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018, securing fourth-place finishes in the doubles on both occasions. In 2018 he also made the quarterfinals of the singles event. 

In 2016 he was part of the Scotland Men’s Team to claim a European Team Championship Medal (Bronze) for the first time in 17 years. That year he also attained success on the world stage with a truly inspirational gold medal win at the World Doubles and become World Champion. He repeated that podium success the following year by taking the silver medal. 

He was integral in helping the Scotland Team achieve further medal success at the European Team Championships (bronze) in 2019, winning all three of his matches. Later that year he gained his 150th cap for Scotland in the WSF Men’s World Team championships. 

Alan’s drive, determination and desire for success continue to inspire a new generation of Scottish Squash players.
