One Health Science

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies is developing a new MSc in One Health, to be launched in 2011.

African Vets

This programme is ideal for individuals who wish to gain a world-class award in the subject of One Health. This course is designed to address the demand, especially from veterinary and medical graduates, for a new and stimulating experience in a research/academic environment.

The programme will be delivered by experts in the discipline, and is open to students with a degree in: Veterinary Science, Medicine or to non-vets with an appropriate Biological Science.

 

This new MSc in One Health will build on the close links between human and animal medicine within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. This Masters will be a flagship course for Veterinary and Human Medicine, where members of both professions come together to study issues highly relevant to both human and animal health, taught by world leading scientists, to develop into the next generation of leaders in the global healthcare team.

Educational aims

The educational aims of the taught component are to:

  • Develop an understanding of the role of comparative medicine and animal models for human disease
  • Obtain an up-to-date concept of the current threats of emerging diseases in animals that may threaten human health and of other zoonoses and how these impact food security
  • Develop a basic understanding of epidemiological concepts as they relate to infectious diseases of animals, with a focus on those transmissible to humans
  • Attain a basic understanding of relevant procedures that are used as aids to biomedical research and disease control (for example, molecular biological and immunochemical)

Ways to study

Students will be offered the opportunity to undertake a relevant bench or computer-based project on the 'One Health Theme' in the laboratory of a leading scientist within either the University of Edinburgh's College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine or the Easter Bush Research Consortium (EBRC).

The EBRC is made up of the following institutions:

  • The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies
  • The Roslin Institute
  • The Moredun Research Institute
  • The Scottish Agriculture College

The degree programme can also be intercalated with an undergraduate veterinary degree at Edinburgh or another university.
