The Main Library is the largest of Edinburgh University's Libraries.
It holds the primary collections in arts, humanities, social sciences, medicine and informatics.
It also houses the Library's general collections of books and periodicals, older books in all subjects, most of the special collections of rare books and manuscripts, the University archives and the Lothian Health Service Archive.
From Monday 18 April - Wednesday 18 May 2016 inclusive, reference users will not be able to access the Main Library and the Law Library between opening time and 5.30pm. This also includes those with green SCONUL Reference Only cards.
Centre for Research Collections (CRC) users, graduates of the University of Edinburgh, full SCONUL members with borrowing rights and all other users with borrowing rights are not affected by this.
Normal access arrangements will resume on Thursday 19 May 2016.
If you feel an exception should be made in your case, please contact the Duty Librarian stating the reasons for an exception to be made:
A project is underway to create additional study spaces in the Main Library on floors 2, 3 and 4 and on the lower ground floor.
It is hoped that these will be in place for the start of next session.
As part of this project, we have re-organised collections on the 4th floor - thank you for your patience and understanding while the work was underway.
Work on the 2nd and 3rd floor collections will take place over the summer vacation. There will be a certain amount of noise and disruption, and areas of collections may be unavailable for a short space of time while items are being moved. If you require a particular item that is being moved, we will be able to retrieve the item for you.
The Library is situated on the south side of George Square. You can find us on Campus Maps.
Staff and students of the University of Edinburgh have full access and borrowing rights. NHS Lothian staff may register as users according to the current service level agreement with the University of Edinburgh and upon production of current ID documentation.
Access to the library is also available to other users but please be aware that during exam periods access may be restricted.
You can see the most up-to-date location of the collections using the link below.
A selection of brand new books is displayed on the first floor next to a selection of current journals and newspapers. You can borrow these books in the same way as other books in the Main library.
There are lockers within the Main Library that are available for University of Edinburgh students to rent.
Lockers which can be rented are located on the Ground Floor, Floor 1 and Floor 5. There are also 'daytime' use lockers on the Ground Floor which can be rented by all library users.
To apply to rent a locker, please ask at the IS Helpdesk in the Main Library.
There are 3 meeting rooms and 3 training rooms on the First Floor of the Main Library. They are available to book for University of Edinburgh staff, not available for class teaching.
