Appointments and activities

Current

Ms. Azodo was appointed as a Locum Consultant General and Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2015 where she provides emergency and elective general surgery patient care.

Ms. Azodo has academic interests in patient-centered outcomes and quality of care research. She participated in GlobalSurg’s initial project on determinants of quality in emergency abdominal surgery, and is developing a research programme on surgical outcomes following cholecystectomy at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. She holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor Appointment in Health Service, Public Policy and Practice in Brown University’s School of Public Health.

Ms. Azodo contributes to the surgical education efforts at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh working with surgical trainees, medical students, and in the ChM programme. Her particular interests are in the incorporation of online learning into routine medical / surgical education. She completed the Sheridan Center Teaching Certificate I and Facilitating Online Learning (FLO) courses at Brown University.

Past

Ms. Azodo completed her General Surgery residency training at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA) where she received the Mayo Brothers / Barbara Bush Distinguished Fellowship Award for excellence in clinical performance, scholarly activity and humanitarianism, and the Jon van Heerden Award for meticulous patient care.

She obtained Advanced Fellowship training in Hepatobiliary and Pancreas Surgery and Abdominal Transplantation Surgery at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh from 2011 – 2013 under Professor James Garden and Professor Stephen J. Wigmore. During this period, Ms. Azodo graduated from the Masters of Surgery (ChM) Program at the University of Edinburgh and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) with the thesis, ‘Laparoscopic Liver Resection: Is There a Patient and Practice Effect? Report of Cases from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh’

Ms. Azodo held a Consultant Post in Hepatobiliary and Pancreas Surgery in the Brown University Department of Surgery (Rhode Island, USA) from 2013 – 2015 before returning to Edinburgh. During her posting, she received the AHRQ (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) Career development award to study patient-centered outcomes and comparative effectiveness in healthcare.
