Appointments and Activities

After undergraduate training in St Andrews and Manchester University, Farhat returned to Edinburgh to undertake basic surgical training. She completed her MD thesis in laboratory and translational research examining the molecular mechanisms underlying NSAID- mediated prevention of colorectal cancer in Professor Dunlop’s research group. Her higher surgical training was in South-east Scotland and latterly she undertook a period of training in laparoscopic colorectal surgery with the Oxford colorectal unit. She is an enthusiastic tutor and mentor for undergraduates and surgical trainees.

Farhat's research endeavour was strongly supported during completion of her higher surgical training in Edinburgh. She was awarded a highly-competitive Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist fellowship which she commenced in 2010. Currently she integrates her clinical practice, encompassing the breadth of coloproctology, with her translational research programme which focuses on the effects of chemopreventive agents on mTOR signalling in colorectal cancer.
