Clinical Interests

Mr Deans clinical interests lie in the management of benign and malignant oesophago-gastric disease, minimally invasive surgery, hernia surgery and emergency surgery.

Appointments and Activities

Current

Mr Deans was appointed as a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgeon, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in February 2011. He has an active interest in teaching and is the current Year 1 Director of the Edinburgh Postgraduate ChM Programme. He also maintains a strong research interest, mainly relating to the role of inflammation in cancer. He is a reviewer for a number of medical journals and serves on the editorial board of the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology. Mr. Deans became the Clinical Director for General Surgery in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2021. 

Past

Mr Deans graduated with Honours from Edinburgh University in 1998 and undertook his basic surgical rotation in Cambridge and his higher surgical training in South-East Scotland. He spent some time as a Clinical Lecturer at Edinburgh University and undertook research investigating the role of inflammation in oesophago-gastric cancer following which he was awarded a MD thesis with distinction from Edinburgh University. Mr Deans spent a year at the National University Hospital in Singapore on an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Fellowship.
