GlobalSurg and The NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery

The Surgical Informatics Group works in collaboration with the Universities of Birmingham and Warwick to lead the GlobalSurg Collaborative (www.globalsurg.org) and The NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery (http://nihrglobalsurgery.org).

GlobalSurg is a growing international network of more than 8000 surgical researchers in over 100 countries carrying out research into what influences the outcomes of operations in different economic settings. GlobalSurg studies are open to any hospital, anywhere in the world and any researcher from medical student to professor can take part in GlobalSurg projects. The GlobalSurg Collaborative has now conducted three large scale international cohort studies including data on over 40,000 patients worldwide.

The NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery was established in 2017 following substantial investment (£7M) from the National Institute of Health Research Overseas Development Aid funds. Working alongside GlobalSurg and partners in low and middle income countries (LMICs), the NIHR Global Surgery Unit is establishing  independent research hubs in LMICs to conduct clinical research for surgical patients. Each hub acts as an independent research centre running clinical trials and supporting research training and education. 

Working in this way, the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery  will build research capacity and infrastructure in partner countries ensuring long term sustainability of high quality research, and ultimately improving surgical outcomes for patients around the world.
