Science Insights Summer School
A summer work experience programme, designed to give school pupils a real insight into the work and life of research scientists across different areas of biological, biomedical and animal sciences.
The University has a wealth of cutting-edge research facilities and top-level researches in the fields of biological, biomedical and animal sciences. This programme allows school pupils to access these facilities, meet the researchers and gain a valuable insight into their work. This gives the pupils a realistic and inspiring view of the world of research, raises aspirations towards related courses and helps them to create strong and well-considered applications. The Widening Participation team works closely with the Science Insights team to ensure that pupils from a range of different backgrounds take part. This collaboration means that many pupils who might otherwise struggle to access work experience opportunities are able to get involved.
Science Insights is an exciting summer work experience programme designed to give school pupils a real insight into the work and life of research scientists across different areas of biological, biomedical and animal sciences. The non-residential, week-long programme takes place in late July where pupils learn from University of Edinburgh students and researchers. It includes presentations and discussions on a range of topics, such as ethics in research, the use of animals in research and various careers paths plus a skills session to help with future university applications.
Science Insights is for pupils who attend school in Scotland and are interested in studying biological, biomedical or animal sciences at university. The programme is for S5 pupils who will typically be moving into S6 just after Science Insights has taken place. The programme involves all six research institutes in the University of Edinburgh College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, providing access to its cutting-edge facilities and inspiring researchers.
