Ross Walker (PhD student)

Thesis title: Basketball, Culture and Society in a Devolved Context

Background

Ross Walker is a PhD student and tutor at The University of Edinburgh. Born and raised in Dundee, Scotland, Ross joined the university in 2020 after completing his undergraduate and postgraduate degree at the University of Dundee. Since commencing his educational journey, he has amassed over six years’ worth of experience of working within a university environment. Here, he has upheld a series of positions across three different Scottish institutions.

Obtaining an extensive background in sport, two of Ross’ main achievements to date include representing Scotland internationally at basketball whilst also being involved in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He has since gone on to work within logistic teams for various sporting and non-sporting events, holding positions such as Event Manager while working on numerous Sports Committees. One of the most recent tournaments was the Homeless World Cup Foundation’s inaugural Four Nations Challenge Cup where Ross operated as the Competition/Registration Manager.

With a passion for basketball, Ross currently sits on the Scottish Basketball Hall of Fame Selection Panel.  He is also contemporarily collaborating with numerous sports clubs, community partners and national governing bodies on multiple up and coming projects.

Ross’ current research primarily investigates the business of sport, sports history, and sport policy alongside the use of sport as a tool for development and capability building. This links to the nature of his PhD thesis which specifically focuses on basketball in Scottish culture and society.

It is Ross’ fundamental intentions to discover and identify both economic and social initiatives to help develop humanistic opportunities which can make a positive difference in people’s lives. As an advocate of sport and the benefits of sport, he encourages people to indulge and pursue sport, physical activity and indeed education within whatever capacity and to whatever level they aspire.
