Background

Marja carried out her PhD research in David Lyons’ lab in the Centre for Neuroregeneration (now part of Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences), developing a zebrafish model of myelin breakdown and repair. Following graduation in 2017, she joined the Research Support Office (now Edinburgh Research Office) where she supported CMVM researchers throughout the process of winning research funding, from scoping for opportunities to costing, developing and submitting applications.

In 2018, Marja moved to the CMVM Research Office as a Research Impact Officer. In this role, she worked with College researchers and the REF team to identify, develop, evidence and finalise the College’s portfolio of impact case studies for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 exercise. Following the REF submission, Marja undertook a diverse set of responsibilities, collectively aimed at enhancing the College’s research environment, outputs and impact; examples include supporting the CMVM Core Facilities Group and the Clinical Trials Oversight Group, as well as co-developing the College Research Impact Strategy.

In 2022, after a 5-month secondment to the Usher Institute as Senior Research Strategy Manager,  Marja was appointed Edinburgh Neuroscience (EN) Scientific Strategy Coordinator.  In this role, she manages a complex portfolio of activities to support and grow the activities of the EN community and to shape and deliver EN's strategic policy.
