Thesis title: Does severe mental illness predispose to cardiovascular and metabolic disease via an unfavourable adipose storage profile?

Research summary

My current research, although in it's early stages, is focused on understanding the genetic mechanism that mediates unhealthy fat storage in people with severe mental illness (SMI). It is well know that those with SMI have increased risk of cardio-metabolic disease, like cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This risk is often associated with unhealthy fat storage.  We want to better understand this mechanism to shine a much needed light on people who often have more than one illness or disease that affects them and hopefully be able to contribute to the research that will help them lead happier, healthy lives.
