Research summary

I am involved in studies regarding the Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic of the North Sea littoral, with an especial interest in the lithic industries around the northern margins of the North Sea: Denmark, western Sweden, southern Norway, Scotland, and northern England. This is in addition to my broader interest in the Mesolithic altogether. I am also involved in Viking Age studies and am in Iceland, Greenland, and the Canadian Arctic through the summers lecturing and pursuing my interests in the exploitation of marine resources at this period.

Current research interests

I am involved in a study of the lithic material from the northern North Sea littoral from the Late Palaeolithic through the Mesolithic. I am currently leading an excavation at Hunting Hall in North Northumberland, near Lowick, which is a multi-period site that has afforded excellent evidence from the later Iron Age and the Early Medieval era. This has been supplemented by extensive fieldwalking assays, which has resulted in the recovery of much lithic material. This is being used to build an understanding of the landscape, which will subsequently lead to more excavations.

Past research interests

I began my research with studies in South Scandinavia pertaining the the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition. I also did extensive research in the state of Michigan, USA, studying Native American lithic material from the Archaic and Woodland periods along river basins draining into Lake Michigan. More recently, I diversified my interests somewhat and began inquiries in the origins of the sea fishing industry.
