Research summary

His research interests are varied, moving with increasing frequency over the years between Literature and History (his standing in the latter field was recognised with his election to a Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society in 1996).

He is widely known inter alia not only as the scholar who rediscovered and then rehabilitated the XVIIIth century writer Jean-François Marmontel (critical editions of both the Mémoires, and the Correspondance, two monographs, more than 20 articles), but also for being one of the mainstays of the major critical edition of the Complete Works of Voltaire, a project of the Voltaire Foundation, University of Oxford (1967-2022), with which he was actively associated between 1970-2022. Not only is he a Research Fellow of the Foundation (2008), but also a member (1997) of the Editorial Board of those Complete Works for which he produced well over 150 critical editions, all of which are now in print. Between 2008 and 2016, he was essentially engaged (with the historian Bruno Bernard) in being one of the four general editors directing the eight volume edition of the Essai sur les mœurs. He went on (2016-2017) not only to collaborate in the production of the final two volumes of the Corpus des notes marginales (2018) where he contributed nearly three quarters of the 162 entries, but also, in 2016-2019, to edit - with Gérard Laudin – the three volume edition of the Annales de l’Empire (2019). In 2018-2019, he was again a major contributor (5 editions) to a volume of ‘Fragments divers’ which was published at the beginning of 2020. His final contributions to this monumental edition came in 2022 when he wrote the Preface to vol.147 (Textes attribués à Voltaire) and contributed seven of its thirteen constituent parts.

Other interests encompass, for example, the moralist Chamfort (1 book and 5 articles) and the interpretation of XVIIIth century library catalogues (3 critical editions and 5 articles). He was the initiator of the wide-scale, international research project: Voltaire, la tolérance et la justice (1762-1778) which was awarded over £100,000 in public monies (£78,000 by the Leverhulme Trust in 2002), and whose findings have progressively been published since 2005. In recognition of his various scholarly achievements, John Renwick, Officier des Palmes Académiques in 1990, was promoted to the rank of Commandeur in 2002, and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2008.

In March 2021, John Renwick was awarded the Prix littéraire Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes de la Francophonie 2021 for his ‘pioneering rehabilitation’ of Jean-François Marmontel. In July 2021, he was awarded the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Senior Career Medal (the ‘Sir Walter Scott Medal’) in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences for his ‘monumental and ground-breaking’ contribution to the critical edition of the Œuvres complètes de Voltaire’ and his key role in the ‘scholarly resurrection of the highly significant figure, Jean-François Marmontel (1723-1799)’.
