Background

I am a deaf researcher specialising in research relating to deaf people, deaf communities, sign languages and communication.

Qualifications

PhD Linguistics, Macquarie University (2014)

BA (Hons) Linguistics, La Trobe University (2008)

Postgraduate teaching

In Semester 1 2024, I will be teaching a Guided Research Seminar on cripping sign language linguistics. The aim is to tease apart, critique and determine what is useful from different studies, while identifying what is harmful. Prior experience with a sign language is welcome, but not essential. I will also be delivering lectures in courses relating to discourse analysis, multimodality and sociolinguistics with Dr Sumin Zhao and Dr Christian Ilbury. In Semester 2 2025, I will be teaching with Professor John E Joseph on his new Semiotics course as well as the sign language linguistics module in LEL1B.
