Background

Dr Macaden's senior nurse academic career spans 32 years. Leah was on the Faculty of Nursing as a Professor in India’s highest-ranking College of Nursing and a WHO Collaborating Centre at the Christian Medical College [CMC], Vellore until 2011 with a wide range of academic, clinical, management and research expertise. Her expertise includes pedagogical innovations, curriculum development, consultancy, co design and interdisciplinary collaboration for education and research.

Since moving to Scotland, Leah has successfully navigated two unchartered territories [nurse education for the care of older people and online / blended approaches to education]. Deficiencies in the quality of care for older people and an intensified need for an appropriately educated workforce recognised as a key challenge across the UK were the key drivers behind her curriculum initiatives for workforce development and clinical excellence through education and research. Leah has successfully introduced dementia within the core undergraduate nursing curriculum in two Scottish universities since 2014, five years ahead of cognitive health and core dementia competencies being mandated in the curriculum by the Nursing & Midwifery Council, UK in 2019.

Over the past decade, Leah has harnessed technology, innovation and collaboration with interdisciplinary experts to codesign innovative educational resources to support three key areas in the care of older people: dementia; dignity and sensory impairments with national/international significance, reach and impact.

Leah’s strategic leadership and commitment to dementia workforce development have been endorsed by experts from NHS Education Scotland [NES] & Alzheimer Scotland. Her innovative, unique, sector leading, and award-winning education initiatives have received the following national recognition:

Education Provider of the Year: General Practice Awards, UK, 2014

Finalist - Teaching Innovation of the Year: Student Nursing Times Award, UK 2016

Finalist - Best Educational Initiative, Scotland’s Dementia Awards, 2015

Enhanced Student Learning Award: The Herald Higher Education Awards for Scotland, 2016

Leah’s research interests and expertise include nurse education & pedagogy, sensory and cognitive impairments in older people, workforce development and staff wellbeing in care homes, end of life care and global health. She is a keen investor in building future capacity for nursing research through research mentoring and has secured three externally funded PhD studentships for dementia research competitively since 2016.

Leah is a Senior Fellow of the Advance HE and an alumnus of the Scottish Crucible. She was recognised as a Churchill Fellow [UK] in 2019 for her leadership and expertise with innovative approaches to dementia education for workforce development. During the recent pandemic, Leah designed the first comprehensive dementia education resource for blended learning for staff working in care homes: COVID – 19 Dementia Education Program for Care Homes [CODECH] which will become part of the COVID – 19 Knowledge Bank in the UK.

More recently, Leah was recognised as a National Teaching Fellow by Advance HE in Sept 2022, a high-profile national award that recognises, rewards and celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and higher education in the United Kingdom.

Leah is also one of 250 distinguished nurse leaders from around the world and the only nurse academic from Scotland to be inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2022 in recognition of her contributions to health and health care in the care of older people with sensory & cognitive impairments through research integrated teaching harnessing technology and innovation for workforce development.
