WW1 Centenary Programme
The University of Edinburgh marks the centenary of the start of the First World War with a series of events examining the impact of the conflict on the university community and the people of Scotland.

Remembrance Day service
The University Remembrance Day service is a joint service with Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Napier University and Queen Margaret University. All three branches of the Armed Forces will be on parade with the City of Edinburgh Universities Officers Training Corps, the Royal Naval Reserve and the East of Scotland Universities' Air Squadron. The Pipes and Drums of the Universities Officers Training Corps will be in attendance.

The University is a sponsor of Previously... Scotland’s History Festival and the festival will feature a number of our WW1 centenary events.
Exhibition: War and Deeds, Weapons and Wounding
The University of Edinburgh's exhibition 'Words and Deeds: Women, Warfare and Caregiving' explores the often neglected and understated story of women in warfare and was hosted at Surgeons' Hall Museum during 2013. Subsequently, a new exhibition has been developed by Surgeons' Hall Museum to be displayed in conjunction with the original exhibition. 'Weapons and Wounding' will highlights the severity of injuries, exploring the progression of weaponry and the ever increasing need for new medical and surgical techniques to cope with wounding in warfare.

Patrick Watt: Steel & Tartan: The 4th Cameroon Highlanders
Patrick Watt is a doctoral candidate at the University of Edinburgh where he specialises in the history of the First World War. He will be discussing his first book, Steel & Tartan: The 4th Cameron Highlanders in the Great War. Patrick is the Douglas Haig Fellowship's Haig Scholar for 2014.

Scotland's War is an initiative organised by historian Yvonne McEwen and will see the University of Edinburgh work with a range of organisations including the National Library of Scotland, the Scottish Military Research Group and local schools.

Screenings at the Edinburgh Filmhouse
The Edinburgh Filmhouse will be presenting a series of films that relate to the events of the war, dated to coincide with the real events of 100 years ago. Many WWI-related films will be introduced by academics and historians from the University of Edinburgh.
Film Screening: Wooden Crosses
Raymond Bernard's superb adaptation of Roland Dorgelès' novel chronicling life in the trenches, screening in a new restoration. Gilbert Demachy (Pierre Blanchar), a student, enlists when war breaks out. The illusions of this young soldier soon come into contact with the hard realities of war. Part of a four-year series of films relating to the First World War,this screening will be introduced by Professor Jolyon Mitchell, Director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues (CTPI) and Academic Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH).
