Senate meeting - Wednesday 29 May

All members of staff are warmly invited to the presentation and discussion section of Senate at 2pm on Wednesday 29 May 2019.

The theme for the section will be Widening Participation. It will look particularly at the University’s recently introduced Widening Participation Strategy and ways in which colleagues from across the institution are implementing this.

The Strategy has four strands: Aspiration and Early Engagement; Support to Get In; Support to Progress; and Support to Succeed. Speakers will showcase activity that support these strands, and the session will encourage debate about how and why Widening Participation should become fully embedded across the University.

Speakers will include:

  • Laura Cattell – Head of Widening Participation
  • Professor Iain Gordon – Head of the School of Mathematics
  • Andy Shanks – Director of Student Wellbeing

Meeting details

The session will take place on Wednesday 29 May at 2.00pm in Auditorium A (Shirley Hall), Chancellor’s Building, Little France. It will last for approximately 90 minutes and be followed by tea and coffee.

Due to venue capacity requirements, members of staff who are interested in attending the meeting (and who are not already members of Senate) must book a place through MyEd.

Transport to Senate

If there is sufficient demand, Senate Support will organise a coach to transport those wishing to attend the meeting from the Central Area and Kings Buildings to Little France. The coach would leave Bristo Square (the University shuttle bus stop) at 13.00, travel to Kings Buildings (bus stop outside the Roger Land Building) for 13.20, and then travel to Little France. Passengers would be dropped near the public bus terminus at Little France, and would need to walk through the hospital main building to reach Chancellor’s Building. The coach would also do the return journey, leaving Little France at 16.10 and arriving back in the Central Area by 17.00. If you would be interested in using the coach, please email SenateSupport@ed.ac.uk by Monday 20 May at the latest.

There are also excellent public transport links to Little France. A number of buses run from the Central Area (including numbers 49, 33, 7 and 8) and from Kings Buildings (24 and 38). For more information, please see https://www.lothianbuses.com/ or https://www.google.com/maps
