New awards celebrate outstanding students
The breadth of student achievement across the University has been recognised at the inaugural Student Awards.
The new prizes extend the scope of previous student-focused awards and create an inclusive celebration of student accomplishments over the past year.
Winners in 13 categories were chosen by staff, fellow students and external partners.
The awards, organised by Edinburgh University Students’ Association, were presented at a ceremony in the Assembly Rooms on George Street, Edinburgh.
Community spirit
Kate Samuel won the Contribution to the Local Community Award in recognition of her voluntary work with clothing donation charity Smart Works.
The Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Award was presented to peer support group WellComm at King’s, based at King’s Buildings, for its work on campus and in the wider community.
The Jewish Society was chosen as the winner of the Fostering Student Communities Award for its efforts to help develop a sense of belonging for students.
The Contribution to the Global Community Award was presented to Edinburgh Global Partnerships for its development of the international community in Edinburgh and overseas.
Working together
The students and staff from the Coaching for Academic Success and Wellbeing project were chosen as the winners of the Student-Staff Partnership Award.
The Student Collaboration Award was won by the Tandem Language Exchange Programme. The award recognises students or groups who have worked together to successfully create partnerships in a project, event or activity.
Welcoming all
Isabella Stevens-Mulroe received the Outstanding Contribution to the Student Experience Award for helping to create a vibrant, inclusive and respectful environment in the Classics Society.
The History Society won the Place for All Award for its commitment to making students from diverse backgrounds feel welcome.
Positive change
Fatima Seck won the Creating Change Award, which recognises students who have made a difference through their hard work and commitment. Fatima helped organise the Decolonise the Curriculum conference, contributed to the BME Freshers’ Guide, and co-founded the Black Studies Short Programme.
Abhijit Bajracharya won the Creativity and Innovation Award for their work on the Anatomy Workbook project.
Outstanding work
Laura Boxleitner, a School Representative for the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, was selected as the winner of the Student Leadership Award.
The Unsung Hero Award, which recognises students who have acted selflessly for a cause they are passionate about, was presented to Ryan McCuaig of Edinburgh University Badminton Club.
Ryan Gilmour, who created the Discover Sustainable Edinburgh walking tour and the Winds of Change renewable energy project, won the Commitment to Sustainability Award.
