Tweed is set to weave its spell worldwide
The first bespoke tweed to be created for a university has been previewed by student athletes.
The new University cloth incorporates elements of Scotland’s capital city, as well as facets of the University, which is ranked 18th in the prestigious world QS rankings.
Contemporary design
Its base colours of light blue, grey and white mirror the ever-changing Edinburgh sky, while a green thread references a recent study that identified Edinburgh as having more green space than any other British city.
The subtle, contemporary weave also features red and navy yarns that reflect two of the University’s corporate colours.
Also running through it, is a gold thread that is emblematic of the Golden Boy statue, which stands at the top of the dome in the University’s Old College.
Ready to wear
Designed in association with Lovat Mill in the Scottish borders town of Hawick, the tweed complements the University’s own tartan, which was launched in 2007.
The cloth will be sold and distributed by Edinburgh-based tailors Walker Slater.
The collection features suits, hats, ties and accessories.
Student models
The students modelling the newly launched tweed are athletes in performance sports, who train at the University’s Centre for Sport and Exercise.
The models are fencers Chloe Dickson and Etienne Sadeghpoor, sailor Gillies Munro, long jumper Ché Richards and rugby player Lucy Winter.
