Senate meeting - Wednesday 3 October

The next meeting of the University Senate takes place on Wednesday 3 October 2018 at 2pm.

All members of staff are warmly invited to the presentation and discussion section of Senate.

The presentation and discussion section of this Senate meeting will be extended to allow all members of staff to contribute to discussion on several matters of strategic importance to the University:

  • Teaching and Academic Careers
  • Enhancing the Student Experience
  • Refreshing the University’s Strategic Plan
  • The Accessible and Inclusive Learning Policy

The session will take place on Wednesday 3 October at 2pm in the Informatics Forum, Crichton Street and will last approximately 2 hours, during which tea and coffee will be served.

Teaching and academic careers

We have a growing discussion about how well we value excellence in teaching in academic career development alongside other academic roles, in particular research. This was an issue raised by Principal Peter Mathieson in one of his early communications to staff across the University.

This discussion will be an opportunity for colleagues across the University to comment on a set of draft guiding principles on how we might best recognise teaching excellence. These will be available at www.ed.ac.uk/academic-services/projects/teaching-and-academic-careers and will be the subject of consultation over the next couple of months.

Enhancing the student experience

To discuss the actions that have been agreed at University Executive and Court to enhance student experience and recognise excellence in learning and teaching.

Refreshing the University’s Strategic Plan

Over the next few months the University will be refreshing its 2016 Strategic Plan. To enable this, representatives from Governance and Strategic Planning want to engage with colleagues across the University and its external stakeholder community.  This session at Senate will be an opportunity for staff to contribute different perspectives and provide input on the University’s priorities and how these will be delivered.

The Accessible and Inclusive Learning Policy

Professor Jane Norman, Vice-Principal People and Culture, together with a student representative, will discuss the impact of the Accessible and Inclusive Learning Policy and its important role in increasing the accessibility and inclusivity of learning and teaching for all students at the University.
