Award for efforts to improve gender equality
The University has been recognised for its commitment to advancing the careers of women working in higher education.
Edinburgh has retained the institutional Athena SWAN Silver Award it achieved in 2015.
The University is the only Scottish institution to hold a silver award.
Equality initiative
The Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to advance gender equality in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine in higher education and research.
It was expanded in May 2015 to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, professional and support roles, and for transgender students and staff.
The University is one of 145 members of the charter.
University awards
Edinburgh secured its first institutional Athena SWAN Bronze Award in 2006, which was successfully renewed in 2009 and 2012.
The Silver Award achieved in 2015 was the first to be secured by a Scottish institution.
All 20 of the University’s Schools hold at least one departmental Athena SWAN award.
I am delighted the University has retained its Athena SWAN Silver award. It demonstrates the real commitment of the University to gender equality, and the hard work of very many students and staff to ensure this commitment is translated into policies and practices which support all genders.
