Academic takes up key human rights role

An Edinburgh academic has been appointed to a leading role at one of the world’s largest human rights focused research networks.

Dr Kasey McCall-Smith, of Edinburgh Law School, has been appointed Chair of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI).

She will lead AHRI on behalf of the University’s Global Justice Academy for a three-year term.

Joint initiative

The AHRI Secretariat officially transferred to Scotland at the AHRI 2017 Conference in Leuven on 28 April 2017.

It is a joint initiative by the Global Justice Academy and the Centre for the Study of Human Rights Law at the University of Strathclyde.

Dr McCall-Smith will serve alongside Dr Elaine Webster of the University of Strathclyde, who has been appointed as Executive Secretary.

International network

Founded in 2000, AHRI is an international network of more than 60 member institutions from over 30 different countries.

It undertakes research and educational activities in the field of human rights globally.

As part of its leadership of the network, the Global Justice Academy will host the 2018 AHRI Conference at the Edinburgh Law School.
