Responsible investment pledge

Edinburgh has made a pledge to honour environmental, social and corporate governance throughout its investment practice by signing up to the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI).

It was the first university in Europe to become a signatory of the international agreement.

Six principles

Under UN PRI, six principles of responsible investment have been identified.

These are:

  • to incorporate environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes
  • to become active owners and incorporate ESG issues into ownership policies and practices
  • to seek appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities invested
  • to promote acceptance and implementation of the principles within the investment industry
  • to work together to enhance our effectiveness in implementing the principles
  • to report on our activities and progress towards implementing the Principles.

All signatories to the UN PRI publicly commit to adopt and implement these principles.
