OBE for leading breast surgeon

A University-based breast surgeon and researcher has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Professor Mike Dixon

Professor of Surgery Mike Dixon has been made OBE for services to the treatment of breast cancer and for charitable services.

UK leader

Professor Dixon is widely considered to be one of the UK’s leading breast surgeons.

He is based at the Western General’s Breast Unit, the largest of its kind in the UK, with more than 750 patients attending annually.

He also leads research at the Edinburgh Breast Unit. Through this research, he seeks to understand and overcome resistance to hormonal therapy, which is given to 75 per cent of breast cancer patients.

He has been involved in the introduction of many of the newer agents now used in the treatment of breast cancer.

Achievements

An Edinburgh alumnus, Professor Dixon is Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England and Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

He has published more than 250 papers, contributed 76 book chapters and written or edited 27 books. He is a reviewer for 30 cancer-related journals.

He has given more than 200 invited lectures all around the world and has been an invited speaker at major international breast cancer meetings.
