University sets new Equality Outcomes

The University has set challenging Equality Outcomes and associated actions for the period 2013-17.

The outcomes have been set to further the University’s Strategic Plan and Equality and Diversity Strategy, and to meet the requirements of the Scottish regulations under the Equality Act 2010.

They have been developed through extensive consultation, involving a wide range of staff and student groups and individuals, university services and committees and senior management.

This is to ensure that they address the most relevant and significant issues for the University community.

Action plan

A substantial action plan has been identified under five broad aims:

  • Improve the inclusivity of the working and studying environment;
  • Improve the mainstreaming of equality through governance and management;
  • Improve awareness and understanding of equality in the University;
  • Improve equity of pay and career progression for all University staff;
  • Improve equity of access to education in the University.

Mainstreaming the Equality Duty

The University has also published a report on Mainstreaming the Equality Duty, describing our progress in making the public sector equality duty integral to the exercise of our functions.

The public sector equality duty was introduced by the Equality Act 2010 and requires the University, in the exercise of its functions, to have due regard to three needs.

These are the need to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act;
  • advance equality of opportunity;
  • foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Our Mainstreaming report outlines our approach to mainstreaming, gives highlights of the University’s progress in embedding the equality duty and provides links to further information.

The Equality Outcomes and the Mainstreaming report can be accessed on the Equality and Diversity website.
