Advancing careers

The School of Informatics received a Silver Athena SWAN Award, while the Schools of Engineering, GeoSciences and Mathematics each achieved Bronze status.

The Athena SWAN Awards recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) academia.

They are awarded as Bronze, Silver or Gold.

I’m delighted with the recent Athena SWAN Award successes we have had in Science & Engineering. All the schools in CSE are now recognised for their work in championing gender equality, which is a fantastic achievement and positions us to make our work environment even better for everyone.

The Athena SWAN Charter

Edinburgh was awarded its first Athena SWAN University Bronze in 2006 and successfully renewed it in 2009 and again in 2012.

It is one of the original members of the Athena SWAN Charter, which was launched in 2005 and now has more than 80 member universities and research institutes.

String of successes

The latest awards add to the University’s previous Athena SWAN milestones.

To date, Edinburgh schools and institutions have been awarded:

  • one Gold (Chemistry)
  • three Silver (Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry)
  • two Bronze (the Roslin Institute, the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies).

Strategic theme

Enhancing equality and widening participation is outlined in the University’s ‘Strategic Plan 2012-16’ as a key strategic theme.
