Duo displays at Venice Biennale

An Edinburgh College of Art team is displaying its work at one of the world’s most prestigious contemporary art exhibitions.

Liam Ross and Tolulope Onabolu were selected to exhibit at this year’s Venice Biennale Architecture as part of the British Council’s Venice Takeaway project.

The duo was one of 10 architectural teams chosen to participate in the Venice Takeaway exhibition at the British Pavilion.

Regulation and creativity

Venice Takeaway participants were asked to use research drawn from a global expedition to inject new ideas into UK architecture.

Liam, who is Lecturer in Architectural Design, and Tolulope, who is an Edinburgh graduate and tutor, selected Nigerian city Lagos as the destination to research for their project ‘British Standard, Lagos Exception’.

The project compares how state attitudes towards regulation and risk, in both the UK and Nigeria, influence building design and architectural creativity in the cities of Edinburgh and Lagos.

Venice arts

The Venice Biennale offers exhibitions in many areas of the arts including cinema, theatre, dance and music.

Architecture and art exhibitions take place on alternate years.

The British Council has been responsible for the British Pavilion at the Biennale Art since 1938, and since 1991 has run it to showcase UK architecture talent.

The Venice Biennale Architecture is on until 25 November.

The Venice Takeaway exhibition will also be on display at RIBA in London from 26 February to 27 April 2013.
