‘Highly commended’ for green tourism

The University’s John McIntyre Conference Centre (JMCC) has been recognised in an awards scheme that honours the UK’s most environmentally friendly businesses.

The conference centre, which is run by Edinburgh First, was granted ‘Highly Commended’ status in the Goldstar Awards, part of the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Gold Award holder

The JMCC was competing in the conference category against venues such as the SECC in Glasgow and the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

Only holders of the Green Business Tourism Scheme’s Gold Award can enter the Goldstar Awards.

The JMCC has held Gold for just one year.

Eco accreditation

The Green Tourism Business Scheme validates the environmental efforts of hotels, bed & breakfasts, tourist attractions and visitor centres.

The scheme, which started in Scotland 15 years ago, is the biggest of its kind in the world with more than 2,400 members.

The Goldstar Awards honour the efforts of the highest achievers in the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

I have been hugely impressed by all the efforts made by all the finalists. They have demonstrated how it is possible to be environmentally conscious and successful and are prime examples of how going green makes good business sense.
