Supporting youth employment

The University has signed up to a city initiative that aims to support Edinburgh’s young people into employment, education or training.

Run by Edinburgh City Council, the Edinburgh Guarantee launched last year and has since signed up more than 100 organisations.

The Guarantee has led to 457 additional opportunities for young people reducing the number of unemployed school leavers in Edinburgh by 25 per cent compared to last year.

Job creation

By joining the scheme, the University will aim to create a limited number of fixed-term and open-ended roles suitable for school leavers.

These may be training places, modern apprenticeships or placements of a minimum of six months.

Recruitment to these schemes will focus on areas in which there is an anticipated skills shortage, such as trades, technical services as well as some administrative posts.

Learning and development

The creation of these roles will be supported by a framework for induction, support and development.

This will be developed by our learning and development team in collaboration with Edinburgh City Council and other partner organisations, such as Skills Development Scotland.

There will also be opportunities for existing staff members to enhance their leadership skills through playing a role in managing these recruits.

Commitment to community

This move reflects the University’s continued commitment to engage with the wider community, a key theme in the University’s 2010 Social Responsibility and Sustainability Strategy.
