Economist picks up prize

Mike Elsby, Professor of Economics, has received a prize worth £70,000.

He won a Philip Leverhulme Prize for his contribution to economics.

These prizes recognise and reward outstanding scholars of international standing who have the potential to achieve even more.

Leading expert

Professor Elsby’s work aims to develop a better understanding of high and volatile unemployment rates in developed economies.

He has established himself as a leading expert in the theory and empirics of unemployment, both in the UK and the US.

Strong December

This award was one of 25 grants received by Humanities & Social Sciences in December, in what was a strong month for the College.

Among these was funding worth more than £1.1 million to an Edinburgh College of Art project to investigate the effectiveness of the Forestry Commission’s Woods In and Around Town scheme.

New figures from ERI reveal that the College of Humanities and Social Science attracted an awards total worth more than £2.2 million in December.

This is more than 10 times the amount earned by the College through grants for the same period in 2010.

Other awards

The College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine also had a strong December.

It received 37 research awards, more than double the quantity it earned for the same period in 2010.

The College of Science & Engineering received more than £7.7 million through research grants in December.
