New medical innovations wanted

Edinburgh Bioquarter is hunting for new innovations for products and services that will benefit human or animal health.

University of Edinburgh researchers or postgraduate students who have ideas with commercial potential are invited to enter the annual Bioquarter Innovation Competition.

The competition, which is now in its third year, is also open to NHS employees.

Prizes and support

The 20 best entries will each win an iPad3. From this top 20, five entries will be selected as finalists.

These five finalists will be reviewed by a judging panel, comprising experts from BioQuarter and the competition sponsors.

Winning entries will receive prize money, as well as support from the BioQuarter company creation team and expert advice on patenting, commercial growth, and taxation and financial planning from our sponsors Marks&Clerk, MBM Commercial and Springfords.

The competition can be entered online via the Edinburgh Bioquarter website.

Past entrants

Since its inception, the BioQuarter Innovation Competition has received 100 entries.

Three companies have been created from winning entries, including Pharmatics Limited, a data analysis company for drug development, and Cytomos Limited, creators of the world’s first desktop cell-sorting device for use in medical research and diagnostics.

Prizes worth more than £60,000 have been awarded to more than 30 winners across the two years of the competition, and 54 new scientific methods or inventions have been disclosed.
