Gold for gender equality

The University’s School of Chemistry has earned the highest award available for promoting gender equality in the science, engineering and technology fields.

The School of Chemistry is the second department in the UK, and the first in Scotland, to receive the Athena SWAN Gold award.

Best practice

To be the second department in the UK ever to achieve Gold recognises all the hard work we have put in over the last six years.

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology in higher education and research.

Gold awards are granted to departments that can be regarded as beacons of achievement in gender equality.

Previous awards

The University is one of 42 members of the Athena SWAN Charter and a holder of its Bronze award.

Last year, the School of Biomedical Sciences earned the Silver award, and earlier this year the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh received Bronze.
