Scholars and bursars welcomed

The University has officially welcomed more than 500 scholars and bursars at a series of events this autumn.

The University runs an extensive scholarship and bursary programme offering support to hundreds of students and researchers every year.

These events provide the opportunity to welcome the recipients of these awards, and thank the donors who enable the support to be given.

Bursary investment

The Bursary Welcome Reception was attended by more than 200 students and 65 donors.

The University has this year been able to award 210 new Access Bursaries, renew the Access Bursaries for 500 students and award accommodation bursaries to 80 students.

Professor Mary Bownes, Vice-Principal External Engagement, announced the University’s commitment to invest £10 million to provide additional bursaries Scotland-domiciled students from 2012.

This investment will pave the way for an additional 72 Access Bursaries and further 62 Accommodation Bursaries.

Special guest

Alumnus and NASA astronaut Piers Sellers was the special guest at the Scholarship Welcome reception, attended by around 300 new scholarship students and 30 donors.

The Principal, Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, shared with guests the success of the Principal’s Career Development PhD Scholarships, which has seen funds of more than £1.8 million allocated during this academic session.

Prestigious awards

Students in receipt of prestigious academic awards including Marshall, Fulbright and Commonwealth scholarships, were honoured at a special dinner at Abden House.

Also welcomed were recipients of University of Edinburgh scholarships, including the Principal’s Indian Masters Scholarships and the Edinburgh Global Development Academy Scholarships.
