Understanding hunger

Gareth Leng, Professor of Experimental Physiology and Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences, has received a six-figure award for his role in the new EC-funded Full4Health project.

The study, uniting 19 European labs, will investigate what happens in our body to determine whether we feel full or hungry.

Tackling obesity

The project will explore how our body responds to food at different stages of maturity throughout a typical lifespan.

It is hoped the research findings will help inform the food industry so that it can, in the future, formulate food that will help tackle obesity, as well as under nutrition in the elderly and those recovering from illness.

MVM grants

This grant was one of 24 awarded to the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine in February.

Other College projects to attract awards included a feasibility study exploring the use of GPS in patients with dementia, research into borderline personality disorder and an influenza vaccine effectiveness study.

Strong performances

The College of Science & Engineering attracted 47 awards with a collective value of more than £9,253,280 during February.

Successful projects included Spacebook, a GeoSciences and Informatics collaboration, as part of a consortium of European universities to develop dialogue-based technology for navigating cities.

The College of Humanities & Social Science also performed well in February.

HSS projects to secure funding included a study into the professional development of student and newly qualified teachers and an investigation into anti-superstition activism in India.
