These awards are given to outstanding scholars who have made an internationally recognised contribution to their field of study yet have the potential to achieve more.

Significant increase for HSS

Dr George’s research interests are in the art and architecture of the early Islamic period and the Islamic arts of the book.

His £70,000 award was one of 13 granted to the College of Humanities & Social Sciences in November.

During that month, the College saw the total value of its research awards increase by 57 per cent over the same period in 2009.

Engineering performs well

The College of Science & Engineering saw its research awards increase some 20 per cent by value over the same period in 2009.

In particular, the School of Engineering enjoyed a fruitful November.

It increased its total awards value some 489 per cent up on the same period last year.

Clinical Sciences & Community Health

In the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, the School of Clinical Sciences & Community Health made significant increases in both the number of awards it attracted and their value.

Among the School’s successful projects was Dr Jim Wilson’s Orkney Complex Disease Study, which explores the prevalence and impact of Vitamin D deficiency in the Northern Isles region.
