Author's library recreated

The library of novelist Lewis Grassic Gibbon has been pieced together for the University’s Special Collections.

The novelist’s daughter donated his book collection to the University of Edinbugh’s Main Library in several batches in the late 20th century.

However, the books had not been kept together.

Now, as part of the reorganisation of the rare book collections and with the help of a volunteer, all the books have been arranged to form a distinct collection.

Cultural insights

The library, consisting of more than 300 books, includes works on Scottish history and culture, as well as the classical past.

It also provides evidence for the sources used by Grassic Gibbon when writing famous works such as Sunset Song and Spartacus.

The books can be found through the online catalogue by doing a shelf mark search for Gibbon.

Lewis Grassic Gibbon is one of the best-known names in Scottish literature.

He is most famous for his trilogy A Scots Quair, which is widely considered to be a Scottish classic.
