A University project investigating sustainable heat options in Northern European cities has been awarded a major research grant.

The four-year Heat and the City project has received funding worth almost £1 million from the ESRC/EPSRC.

Community solutions

The project brings together researchers from the schools of Social and Political Science, GeoSciences and Engineering.

It will analyse the successes and failures of recent sustainable heat projects in the UK and Northern Europe.

It will then focus on Glasgow and Edinburgh, working with municipal communities to develop eco-friendly heating and energy conservation solutions.

The study will investigate the thesis that city communities can collectively tackle the issues of energy demand and carbon reduction.

September successes

The project is just one of a large number of University research applications to receive funding during the month of September, according to new ERI figures.

Also fruitful was a Clinical Sciences and Community Health project to investigate models of delivering palliative care in sub-Saharan Africa.

Other successful applications came from the School of Informatics for research to improve children’s social interaction and from the School of Law for a study on youth transitions in crime.

Overall in September, the University secured 75 research awards worth some £10.5 million.
