Main Library books move

The Main Library is to move a major portion of its book collections from the end of July.

The move will coincide with September’s reopening of the second floor, and the closure of the third floor.

New locations

Books classified with Library of Congress (LC) letters A to N will move from the fourth floor to its new location on the refurbished second floor.

The music collection will also be included in the move.

Stock on the third floor will move to temporary locations.

Journals will move to the lower ground floor, and the East Asian, Watt, Serjeant, Centre for African Studies and Dewey collections will be transferred to the fourth floor.

Newspapers and microfilms will move to the fourth floor, with the exception of a selection of the most recent and popular titles that will move to the 1st floor.

Access maintained

There will be a three-week period when books will be inaccessible to users because they have been moved to the second floor before that reopens.

During this brief time, access to books in LC categories A to N will be through a request system.

Staff will collect books from the shelves and leave them at the Main Library Helpdesk for collection.

Normal open-access services will resume in early September.

All other material will remain available on open access in the new locations, although access to particular items will be difficult on the day they are being moved.

Communication

Weekly schedule updates will be communicated via the Main Library Redevelopment Project website, MyEd, Main Library plasma screens and posters on the floor affected.

These will allow users to identify the categories that are being moved day by day.
