Birthday honours recognition

Several members of University of Edinburgh staff have been recognised in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The Birthday Honours are awarded annually to commend exceptional work in a broad range of fields.

Science and medicine

Professor Veronica Van Heyningen FRS, received a CBE for services to science.

The scientist, who holds an honorary professorship within the University, is based at the Medical and Development Genetics at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, part of the Institute for Genetics and Molecular Medicine.

Mr Utheshtra Chetty, retired Senior Consultant Surgeon with the Edinburgh Breast Unit and Honorary Senior Lecturer with the University’s school of surgery, was awarded an OBE for services to Medicine.

Also awarded an OBE was Mrs Rosalind Newlands who works with the University’s Office of Lifelong Learning as Course Director for the Scottish Tourist Guides Association Blue Badge Training Course.

She was honoured for services to the tourist industry.

Receiving MBEs were Mr Jim Aitken and Mr Donald Blue.

Mr Aitken, the Director for the University’s Centre for Sports and Exercise, was awarded for services to student sport.

Mr Blue, who is based within the University’s Health and Safety department as one of two CHASTE Project Co-ordinators, was honoured for services to health and safety.
