Chair: Edwin van Beek

Edwin van Beek has been appointed SINAPSE Chair of Clinical Radiology.

Professor van Beek received his medical education at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

After a two-year period as Senior House Officer in Essex, he returned to the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam.

There, he obtained his PhD on the topic of Pulmonary Embolism and then underwent his specialist radiology training.

He also received additional formal training in Clinical Epidemiology during this time.

Professor van Beek then went to the University of Sheffield, gaining promotion to Reader.

His main clinical and research focus was on cardiothoracic imaging using CT and MRI.

He helped establish a successful chest MRI program, participated in the lung cancer and pulmonary hypertension clinics, and underwent formal training in Position Emission Tomography (PET) at King’s College London.

This led to the development of Oncologic Imaging at Sheffield.

He took on teaching responsibilities and received his Masters of Education for University Lecturers.

Subsequently, he was appointed as Professor of Radiology, Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa.

There he developed a clinical service for Cardiac CT Angiography and worked on CT-based methods for identification and quantification of lung diseases.

He is married to Grace.
