The new venture is called the Numerical Algorithms and Intelligent Software (NAIS) Centre.

It comprises researchers from Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University and the University of Strathclyde.

Tackling scientific challenges

Working together, NAIS scientists will combine mathematical expertise with supercomputing skills to tackle problems faced by modern science.

Projects will include predicting the effects of climate change, designing telecommunications networks and modelling oil reserves for extraction.

Launch event

The Centre was launched with a lecture by Professor Mark Snir of the University of Illinois.

His lecture looked at the key challenges in High Performance Computing.

A three-day workshop on intelligent software was also part of the Centre’s official opening.

The workshop brought together researchers in computational science, applied mathematics and computer science.
