Partnership to save Gaelic

The University of Edinburgh is to join a national research initiative to support the preservation of the Gaelic language.

It will partner the Universities of Aberdeen and Glasgow and the UHI Millennium Institute in the project.

Research pooling

Following investment from the Scottish Funding Council, the four universities will pool resources to address the decline of Gaelic.

The funding will be used to recruit world-class research staff and create nine PhD studentships to be held across the four institutions.

An annual conference to showcase the project’s findings will also be held.

Collective effort

The universities will work closely with key agencies including Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

The findings arising from the project will inform local and national efforts to reverse the decline of Gaelic.

This partnership will play a key role in informing how we drive forward our work on promoting the Gaelic language over the next few years. We must create a new generation of Gaelic speakers in order to preserve a rich seam in the cultural life of Scotland.
