New drinking water policy

The University is launching an environmentally friendly drinking water policy.

The initiative will save the University £80,000 a year.

The new policy requires the removal of all free-standing bottled water coolers before the new semester.

The provision of these devices is costly and not in line with sustainable practice.

Their removal will also reduce personal risk of manual-handling injury or ill health from microbiological contamination.

Safe drinking water

Staff members are encouraged to drink tap water.

Estates and Buildings upgraded all cold-water storage facilities across the estate from 1997-2003.

This year, an independent water quality consultant carried out reviews to establish that drinking water from mains sources meets statutory requirements.

Exceptional circumstances

In extreme cases, where a supply of chilled water is regarded as essential, a plumbed-in water dispenser may be requested.

Installation of such dispensers will be undertaken only after consultation with Estates and Buildings.
