New cycle route links campuses

A new city cycle corridor will give students and staff better access between campus sites.

The planned route will provide cycling access between George Square and King’s Buildings.

Student lobbying

The City of Edinburgh Council’s Transport Committee approved the cycle lane following student lobbying.

The Students’ Association presented the idea to the Council after a number of students reported serious injuries gained from cycling between the two sites.

Supporting cycling

Approval for the new route will help encourage staff and students to travel to the University by bike.

The University runs a range of initiatives to promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and healthy way to travel.

These include:

  • Loans for bicycles and equipment
  • Commuter cycle training
  • Bike maintenance courses

More than 20 per cent of staff and students based at King’s Buildings cycle every day. I fully expect that this new route, together with ongoing work to provide more and better cycle facilities at King’s Buildings will encourage yet more cycling.
