The Visual Arts Research Institute, Edinburgh (VARIE) has launched a radical new e-journal.

“Art in Translation” (AIT) publishes English translations of key texts on art, architecture and visual culture.

It is based in the University’s School of Arts, Culture and Environment and is funded by the Getty Foundation.

Our leading role

AIT was officially launched in Los Angeles earlier in the year.

Its first issue was marked in Edinburgh with a groundbreaking symposium, “Art Writing: Translations, Adaptations and Modalities”, in April.

It brought together acclaimed scholars, curators, translators and postgraduate students to address key issues in art writing and translation.

This fruitful meeting of two disciplines promises rich rewards for both and emphasises Edinburgh’s leading role in the debate on globalisation and the visual arts.

“We expect AIT to serve as a significant catalyst in bringing important international scholarship to broader attention and in moving art history and visual culture in challenging new directions.”
