Visiting Students

How to apply to the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures as a visiting PhD student.

The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) welcomes visiting PhD students. We are currently not accepting applications, but do check back in January 2024.

A visiting research student is someone who is currently enrolled in a PhD programme at another institution and wishes to conduct research in LLC at the University of Edinburgh for a period of time (to be determined).

If you are a visiting research student, you will not graduate from the University of Edinburgh, and will return to your home institution following the defined period of research.

Please be aware that LLC does not provide funding for visiting students. 

During your visit, we will provide:

  • Visitor access to IT accounts, on-campus WIFI access, and library access
  • Two formal meetings with your academic sponsor: one at the start; and one at the close of your visit
  • Access to relevant events across the University
  • Hot desk working space in the Main University Library, subject to availability

We cannot provide attendance at course-specific lectures or other classes.

How to apply to be a visiting PhD student in LLC

Step 1

Identify an academic member of staff within the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) whose research interests relate to your own.

You do not need to contact this member of staff, you just need to be able to tell us who they are at the next step.

Step 2

Complete our online form telling us a little bit about you and your research and why you feel LLC would be a good fit for you.

You will also need to tell us when you propose to come and which member of our academic staff you wish to support you - see Step 1.

The application form for our next intake will likely be available for completion in January 2024.

Step 3

When we have received your form, we will consider your request and advise you if we are able to accept you as a visiting student. 

If you are successful, you will be provided with a confirmation letter so that you can request to formally apply through the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' Visiting Student Office.

Applications and all relevant documentation must be received at least eight weeks prior to the proposed start of the visit.
